La Maddalena is the largest of the 60 or so islands and islets that make up the fascinating archipelago in the north-east of Sardinia, off the coast of Gallura. A true natural jewel, it is the only inhabited island within the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park and is home to a historic town with timeless charm, which was once an important Italian and American military base.

A scenic 45-kilometre road route hugs the island, offering breathtaking views of granite rocks, crystal-clear coves and wild inlets, while the hinterland is characterised by rolling hills dotted with Mediterranean scrub. La Maddalena gives its name to the entire archipelago and is its administrative heart, as well as one of the most popular destinations for those wishing to immerse themselves in unspoilt nature.

Its strategic position in the Mediterranean made it a protagonist of important historical events. In 1793, the French army, led by a young Napoleon Bonaparte, unsuccessfully attempted to conquer the island, which was repelled by the fleet commanded by Domenico Millelire from Magdalena. Admiral Nelson also stopped in these waters, attracted by the archipelago’s strategic position. Today, La Maddalena is a must-visit destination for lovers of the sea, history and extraordinarily beautiful landscapes, offering a perfect mix of nature, culture and relaxation.
